Writs & Cures: Julian Burnside & understanding depression

Tuesday, 20th February 2018

In this edition of Writs and Cures the team take a look at depression as ideas about the condition are changing and more people are questioning the old adage that depression is due to a chemical imbalance in the brain.

Most recently Johann Hari published a book called Lost Connections basically saying everything we've been told is wrong, and he talks about 9 causes. He did the same previously for addiction. But is it that simple? Is there just a list of causes waiting to be discovered? Writs and Cures looks into what is really known about depression, its causes and how much is theory and how much is fact.

Plus special guest Melbourne barrister Julian Burnside AO QC joins the team to discuss refugee justice, the difference between the legal and justice and the profound importance of making sure people feel heard.

If you are having any problems with your mental health or if this discussion raises concerns for you, remember you can call Life Line on 13 11 14 or Beyond Blue on 1300 22 46 36.

Psychiatrist Dr Steve Ellen and Lawyer Bill O'Shea join Lindy Burns for Writs and Cures every Tuesday night on ABC Radio Melbourne & Victoria from 8pm.
